Class Description
Exploring the Understory is a 6-week class that invites you to bring more depth and connection to your creative practice. The class combines creative prompts and activities to help clarify your purpose for making, as well as developing strategies to work through the blocks that inevitably occur in any creative practice. The class is structured to provoke play and curiosity, while also encouraging you to dig deep into your revelations and insights, unearthing patterns and beliefs that hold you back.
In our weekly classes I will introduce activities, encourage discussion, and provide time for all to share about their progress and insights. The validation that comes from witnessing others going through similar ups and downs and sharing their skills for navigating rough terrain is invaluable. You will also meet with me for one-on-one coaching sessions twice during the 6-week period, so we can further discuss your unique discoveries and goals, and how to bring what you learn in the class with you into your next endeavors.
Who is this class for?
This class is for anyone who currently has or desires to have a creative practice and wants to reanimate or deepen their commitment to it. This is not a class focused on technical skills, so it is expected that you already have materials and methods that you prefer to create with. I am primarily a visual artist who is more recently leaning into storytelling and combining words and drawing in my work. I imagine this class will work best for artists and writers, though please reach out if your means of making pushes these boundaries and we can discuss whether it would be a good fit for you.
Note that this class is taught with sensitivity to diverse gender and racial identities, and intention to honor our differences as strengths. If you do not consider yourself an ally to LGBTQIA+ or social justice movements for equity for BIPOC folks then this class will not be a good fit for you.
Instructor Background
I’ve taught art at the college level for the past 16 years and I look forward to using my experience supporting students and navigating my own art practice to support the folks who take this class. In addition to this more traditional experience, my love of nature, health and wellness, interest in animism, magical practices, and Tarot all inform my way of engaging with others and creativity. In my eyes, everything we create comes from source and is pure magic! And, it is also okay if you don’t feel the same way. I see myself as a guide and coach for you through the journey of this class, inviting you to try different approaches along the way and encouraging you to follow the sparks that most resonate with you.
